A rich, creamy, and festive drink made with milk, cream, eggs, and warm spices—perfect for the holiday season. Serve it chilled or warm, spiked or alcohol-free.
Ingredients
– 4 large eggs
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar
– 2 cups whole milk
– 1 cup heavy cream
– 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
– 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
– Pinch of salt
(Optional): 1/2 to 1 cup bourbon, rum, or brandy
Instructions
1. In a bowl, whisk eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.
2. In a saucepan, heat milk, cream, and salt until warm (not boiling).
3. Slowly whisk warm milk into the eggs to temper.
4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly (160°F/71°C).
5. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla and nutmeg.
6. Chill for 2+ hours. Add alcohol before serving if desired.
Notes
– For a thicker eggnog, use more heavy cream.
– You can make it a day ahead—it tastes better the next day.
– Garnish with whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.
