Description

The Classic Muffuletta Sandwich is a New Orleans Italian-American creation featuring layers of Italian deli meats, cheeses, and a bold olive salad on a sesame-seeded round loaf. Packed with savory, tangy, and briny flavors, this hearty sandwich is a staple in Louisiana cuisine.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Olive Salad
  • ½ cup green olives (chopped)
  • ½ cup black olives (chopped)
  • ¼ cup Giardiniera (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp capers
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • ¼ cup roasted red peppers (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • For the Sandwich
  • 1 large Muffuletta bread (or round Italian loaf)
  • ¼ lb Genoa salami
  • ¼ lb mortadella
  • ¼ lb capicola
  • ¼ lb ham
  • ¼ lb provolone cheese
  • ¼ lb mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. 1️⃣ Prepare the Olive Salad
  2. In a bowl, combine olives, capers, garlic, Giardiniera, and roasted red peppers.
  3. Add red wine vinegar, olive oil, oregano, and red pepper flakes.
  4. Stir well and marinate for at least 1 hour (preferably overnight).
  5. 2️⃣ Assemble the Sandwich
  6. Slice the Muffuletta bread in half horizontally.
  7. Spread half of the olive salad on the bottom half of the bread.
  8. Layer the meats (salami, mortadella, capicola, and ham).
  9. Add the cheeses (provolone and mozzarella).
  10. Spread the remaining olive salad on the top half of the bread.
  11. Place the top half over the filling and press firmly.
  12. 3️⃣ Let It Rest & Serve
  13. Wrap the sandwich tightly and let it sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.
  14. Slice into quarters or eighths and serve at room temperature.

Notes

For best results, let the sandwich rest before serving—this enhances the flavor!
