Description

A creamy, comforting classic made with tender green beans, savory mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions. A must-have side dish for holiday meals

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 1/8 tsp black pepper

  • 4 cups cooked green beans (or 2 cans, drained)

  • 1 1/3 cups French fried onions (divided)

  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (for a cheesy twist)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • In a mixing bowl, combine mushroom soup, milk, black pepper, and half of the fried onions.

  • Stir in cooked green beans (and cheese if using).

  • Transfer to a 1.5-quart casserole dish.

  • Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.

  • Top with remaining fried onions and bake 5 more minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • Make ahead: Assemble 1 day ahead and refrigerate. Add onions before final bake.

  • Green beans: Fresh, frozen (blanched), or canned all work well.

  • Soup substitute: For homemade, use a creamy béchamel with mushrooms.

  • Add cheese for a richer flavor, or sautéed mushrooms for added texture.
